War Story
Incredible feat of honor and bravery.
Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts:
While guarding a French outpost in the middle of the night with his partner, Needham Roberts, they came under a surprise attack from the Germans. The Germans fired volley upon volley of shots at them and Roberts was gravely wounded and Johnson was slightly wounded. As the Germans tried to take Robert as prisoner, Johnson fought back hard. He loaded the wrong caliber into his gun and it jammed. After that, he charged the crowd of Germans with only his knife and empty gun. He began frantically slicing with his bolo knife and hitting them with the butt of his gun. With help from Roberts throwing grenades, Johnson successfully drove away the German raid while sustaining 21 separate injuries. In the morning, the damage was fully assessed and it shocked everyone. Johnson killed four Germans with his knife and both drove off an estimated thirty more. After that, Johnson was the first American, white or black, to earn the Croix de Guerre, Fance's highest award for bravery and valor in battle. Needham Roberts, the second.
